AXYS offers three major analyses to support oil sands projects:prevnext
AXYS analyzes these compounds with a modified EPA 8270C/D combined with EPA 1625 guidance for the application of isotope dilution/recovery correction quantification. These methods include a wide scope of compounds, very low detection limits and high levels of positive identification that can be applied to all environmental matrices. Environmental matrices and hydrocarbon (HC) sources can be tested for forensic determination of sources of environmental contamination.
Alkanes typically accompany PAH analysis as the alkane pattern can also aid in source determination. AXYS analyzes C12 to C36 Alkanes by an isotope dilution, GC-MS test.
AXYS provides analyses for 60 Naphthenic Acid (NA) Isomer Groups in multiple matrices, by LC-MS/MS. All crude oils and some finished HC products have unique and measurable NA profiles, though natural vegetation may also be a source of some Naphthenic acids. Natural or petroleum sector sources can be differentiated from this comprehensive low-detection limit test.
Environment Canada Oil Sands Reigion Monitoring
AXYS supports this program focused on benchmarking hydrocarbons in the Oil Sands region Northern Alberta under the Joint Oil Sands Monitoring program. The multi-year SPMD program involves an intensive survey to determine current PAH levels, including sampling surface water across the region using SPMDs as one tool in the process. AXYS analysis of SPMDs for 74 parent, alkylated and Alkylated PAH groups provides a benchmark of current levels of these analytes and allows for measurement of change in these levels, by species, as development occurs in the region.
Oil Sands Region of Alberta – AXYS is a Key Testing Laboratory for Regional Monitoring of Northern Alberta
Since 2002, AXYS has performed water and sediment analysis of PAHs, alkylated PAHs, alkylated PAH groups, and speciated Naphthenic Acids. Dependent on the source of management of these programs, AXYS has worked with RAMP, Alberta Environment, Environment Canada, and AEMERA to establish regional occurrence of these contaminants and change in contaminant as development has occurred. AXYS provides higher levels of analyte identification combined with very low level detection limits to assist our clients in providing the best data available to monitor this region.
AXYS Provides Support for Environment Canada’s Oil Sands Monitoring Program
AXYS currently performs significant work for Environment Canada through a number of multi-year contracts for analysis of POPs and Emerging Contaminants covering thousands of samples per year. Since 2012, AXYS has analyzed samples in support of a variety of Environment Canada programs under the Joint Oil Sands Monitoring Program. Major programs include AXYS analysis of PAHs (including alkylated PAHs) and speciated naphthenic acids in water, sediment, soil, fish, amphibians, terrestrial biota, SPMDs, POCIS.
