AXYS Co-Hosts a Successful BFR 2008 Workshop

AXYS Analytical Services Ltd. and the Institute of Ocean Sciences, Department of Fisheries and Oceans co-hosted the 10th Annual Meeting on Brominated Flame Retardants which took place June 3-4, 2008 in Victoria, BC, Canada.

Brominated Flame Retardants (BFRs) such as PBDEs, HBCD and TBBPA are being examined extensively by many researchers around the world. The large production volumes of these compounds, their persistence, wide distribution in the environment, and their potential toxicological impacts on humans and wildlife have made these contaminants the focal point of many world regulatory agencies. Recent studies have brought to light the presence of metabolites of these compounds in the environment and their toxicological implications. The synergistic occurrence of BFRs with other persistent organic pollutants such as PCBs, dioxins and DDT in the environment and humans raise questions regarding their combined impacts. These emerging issues together with approaches taken to further understand the toxicology, fate and distribution of BFRs in the environment were the focus of this workshop.
